How to set up two-factor authentication on your phone
Learn how to add an extra layer of security to your accounts by setting up two-factor authentication on your iPhone.
What you will learn
In this guide, you will learn how to set up two-factor authentication (often called 2FA) on your iPhone. Two-factor authentication is like adding a second lock to your front door. Even if someone has your password, they need a special code from your phone to get in. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your accounts safe.
What you need
- An iPhone with iOS 15 or later
- An account you want to protect (such as your Apple ID, Google account, or email)
- A few minutes of time
The steps
Step 1: Understand what two-factor authentication does
When you log into an account with just a password, anyone who knows that password can get in. Two-factor authentication adds a second step: after entering your password, you also need to enter a short code that is sent to your phone or generated by an app. This means only you — the person holding your phone — can access the account.
Step 2: Open your iPhone Settings
Go to your home screen and tap the Settings app. It has a grey icon that looks like gears. This is where you will set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, which protects your iCloud, App Store, and other Apple services.
Step 3: Tap your name at the top
At the very top of the Settings screen, you will see your name and photo (or initials). Tap on it. This takes you to your Apple ID settings, where you manage your account security.
Step 4: Go to Sign-In & Security
Tap Sign-In & Security. This section controls how you log into your Apple account. Here you will find the option to turn on two-factor authentication.
Step 5: Turn on Two-Factor Authentication
Tap Two-Factor Authentication. If it is not already turned on, you will see an option to enable it. Tap Continue and follow the on-screen instructions. Your iPhone may ask you to confirm your phone number. This is the number where Apple will send verification codes.
Step 6: Verify with a code
Apple will send a verification code to your phone number via text message. Enter this code when prompted. Once verified, two-factor authentication is active. From now on, whenever you (or anyone) try to sign into your Apple account from a new device, a code will be sent to your trusted devices.
Helpful tips
- Save your backup codes: When a service gives you recovery or backup codes, write them down on paper and keep them somewhere safe at home. Do not store them only on your phone.
- Use it on your most important accounts first: Start with your email and bank accounts. These are the most valuable to protect.
- You will not need the code every time: On devices you use regularly, you usually only need to enter the code once. Your phone remembers that it is a trusted device.

Frequently asked questions
What if I lose my phone?
Most services give you backup codes when you set up two-factor authentication. Keep these codes written down in a safe place, like a notebook at home. If you lose your phone, you can use a backup code to log in and set up two-factor authentication on your new phone.
Is two-factor authentication really necessary?
Yes. Passwords can be guessed or stolen. Two-factor authentication means that even if someone knows your password, they still cannot get into your account without your phone. It is one of the best ways to protect yourself online.
