How to Use Google Gemini
Learn how to use Google Gemini, Google's AI assistant. Ask questions, get help with writing, and explore images using your Google account.
What you will learn
In this guide, you will learn how to use Google Gemini, which is Google’s AI assistant. Like ChatGPT, it can answer questions, help you write messages, explain things in simple terms, and much more. If you already have a Google account, you can start using it right away.
What you need
- A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access
- A web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge)
- A Google account (the same one you use for Gmail or YouTube)
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Go to Google Gemini
Open your web browser and go to gemini.google.com. You will see the Gemini homepage with a button to sign in.
Step 2: Sign in with your Google account
Click Sign in and enter your Google email address and password. This is the same account you use for Gmail, YouTube, or Google Maps.
If you do not have a Google account, you will need to create one first. Click “Create account” and follow the instructions.
Once signed in, you will see a text box where you can start typing your questions.
Step 3: Ask your first question
In the text box at the bottom of the screen, type a question or request. For example:
- “What is the difference between a virus and bacteria?”
- “Give me a simple recipe for tomato soup”
- “Help me write a thank you note for a wedding gift”
Press Enter or tap the send button. Gemini will write its answer on the screen.
Step 4: Have a conversation
Like ChatGPT, Gemini remembers what you discussed in the same conversation. You can ask follow-up questions without repeating the context:
- First question: “What are good exercises for seniors?”
- Follow-up: “Which of those can I do at home?”
- Another: “How many minutes per day should I exercise?”
Step 5: Try using Gemini with images
Gemini can analyze images. You can upload a photo and ask questions about it. Click the image icon in the text box and select a photo from your device. Then ask:
- “What plant is this?”
- “Can you read the text in this photo?”
- “What breed is this dog?”
This feature is useful for identifying things you see in everyday life.
Step 6: Start a new conversation
When you want to talk about a different topic, click New chat in the sidebar on the left. This starts a fresh conversation. Your previous conversations are saved and you can return to them later by clicking on them in the sidebar.
Tips
- Google integration. Gemini can work with other Google services. You can ask it to help you draft emails for Gmail or plan events for Google Calendar.
- Compare with ChatGPT. If you already use ChatGPT, try asking Gemini the same questions and see which answers you prefer. Different AI tools have different strengths.
- Gemini on your phone. You can also use Gemini on your smartphone through the web browser or by downloading the Gemini app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Check answers. Like all AI tools, Gemini can sometimes give incorrect information. Always verify important facts with other sources.
